- Register with UCAS (the easiest part)
- Find the right course
- Find your perfect university
- Fill out your application form
- Be patient for replies
Register with UCAS (the easiest part)
Firstly, you need to register your details with UCAS, the organisation that operates the application process for UK universities. This is the really easy part; just make sure you don’t accidentally spell your name wrong (you’d be surprised how often it happens!).
Registration is free and takes approximately 15 minutes. You can register here.
Find the right course
Now, this is the important part. You need to find a course that you’re interested in and are willing to devote the next three years or more of your life to. This is a decision that definitely shouldn’t be made too quickly as you don’t want to start a course and end up not enjoying it. But there are that many course options within the UK, you’re guaranteed to find one that you love.
However, it’s a decision that should fill you with excitement. Choose the perfect course and it can help develop you both professionally and as a person. We’d advise choosing a subject area that you’re definitely interested in and is a step towards your future career.
Once you’ve found your perfect course, be sure to note down the UCAS number as you’ll need it later on in the application process.
Find your perfect university
After you’ve found the perfect course, it’s time to look at where you want to study. The UK is home to many amazing universities, all packed full of unique character and heritage. The UK is lots of diverse cultures all coming together as one and our universities reflect this.
There are many things to consider when choosing the perfect university - such as the location, the different courses, the type of university, the overall cost and more. We recommend that you shortlist the universities that catch your eye so then you can narrow down your options when it comes to making your firm and back up choices.
Universities are very proud of the results they achieve and their heritage. But what attracts one student might deter another. It all depends on your wants and needs from your UK university experience. Your budget is also a factor to keep in mind as it depends where you can afford to spend three years studying.
Newcastle is renowned for its affordable, exciting student lifestyle. Whereas, London is generally regarded as being more expensive and harder to live in on a student budget.
Likewise, with your shortlist of universities, make a note of their unique UCAS codes so that you can remember them for later reference when filling out your application.
Fill out your application form
You’re allowed to apply for five universities (unless you’re applying for medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine - in which case, you can apply for four universities). And one form is used to apply for all of these.
This doesn’t mean that they have to all be different universities. After all, you could apply for five different courses at the same university if you really wanted to. It’s your university education and it’s completely in your hands.
With that in mind, a personal statement is a requirement of your university application and they usually need to be tailored specifically to your course. This is a biography of your skills, experiences and interests that showcases you to your chosen universities. You’re only allowed to write one. So, keep that in mind if you’re thinking of applying for five courses that are different to each other.
The chances are your personal statement won’t be broad enough to cover five hugely different vocations. For more advice on how to write the perfect personal statement, click here.
Be patient for replies
Once you’ve filled in the application form and sent it off to UCAS, all you can do is sit and wait patiently. Your universities will need time to evaluate yours and thousands of other applications, so don’t be overthinking if you haven’t heard back from them for a couple of weeks.
Have you considered Newcastle as a choice for your studies?
As we’ve mentioned, deciding where and what you should study are two of the main factors that contribute to your whole university experience. You don’t want to commit three years of your life to a place or a course which you won’t enjoy. Which is why Newcastle could be the perfect choice for you.
Newcastle University offers a wide range of subject areas - there’s something for everybody! Not only is the Russell Group university one of the best in the UK, but the city itself is just as impressive too. With its student friendly city and welcoming locals, you’ll be made to feel like one of your own during your time in the North East.
