So, you’re thinking of studying in Europe? These are the best countries to choose from

The United Kingdom

Students come from all over the world to study at the UK’s famous universities which regularly top most ranking lists. Courses are taught in English, so there’s no further language to learn and universities here offer the very best routes into different careers thanks to the country’s position as a global technology and business leader.

There are a wide range of cities to choose from, each offering culture, diversity and a busy social scene. If you’re looking for a friendly city and a university that’s committed to industry-leading research, then Newcastle University is the one for you. The prestigious university, active social scene and vibrant culture makes us a popular choice with international students.

We’re perfectly located in the UK if you’re looking to explore the country and see what’s on offer. Not only will you have access to world-class facilities and expert researchers, but you’ll also be close enough to London, Scotland and other places you’ll want to see because we’re in the middle of the United Kingdom.

Here in Newcastle, you can take a short trip outside the city to see the famous Angel of the North (pictured) or find amazing deals at the bustling Grainger Market. Cheer on Newcastle United Football Club at St. James’ Park, take the perfect selfie on Millennium Bridge, visit the site of Newcastle Castle, catch a show at the Theatre Royal, plus loads, loads more!

There’s a reason that the UK is the second most popular study destination worldwide with over 450,000 international students enrolled here. If you’d like to find out why so many young people come to the UK to learn, then download our guide at the bottom of this page.

Germany

Home to some of the best universities in the world, Germany is a fantastic destination for international students to study. However, international students still need to pay tuition fees, even though anyone born in Germany doesn’t.

Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt are three of the most vibrant cities to study in and there’s a very active social scene too. The Technical University of Munich, in particular, is renowned for its world-leading research.

When you’re not studying, you’ll be able to see everything that Germany has to offer, like the stunning architecture, breathtaking landscapes and delicious food like Bratwurst and Sauerbraten.

Spain

It isn’t just the sun and siestas that make Spain a good European country to study for international students. Barcelona and Madrid are beautiful cities, giving you a flavour of Spain but also allowing you to experience the sights and sounds of other cultures.

Major cities like these can be very crowded, so if they aren’t your thing, then there are smaller universities like Salamanca and Pablo de Olavide which give you a more authentic Spanish experience. Make sure you brush up on your Spanish though, as courses aren’t usually taught in English.

There’s plenty to do outside of the classroom too. Enjoy tapas and cervezas in the evening, travel to the countryside to see the stunning scenery or even head to historic stadiums to see world-famous football teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid in action.

Madrid

Greece

Greece is bursting with culture and history. Think of Zeus, the birthplace of democracy and the advancements that Greek scholars made in medicine, philosophy and mathematics all those years ago.

Fast forward to today and Greece has a good selection of universities, particularly in Athens and Thessaloniki. In between lectures, you can explore amphitheatres, temples and museums - perfect if you’re studying history, philosophy or theology or just want to experience its unmatched culture.

Plus, if you need to relax and unwind after an exam, then just dive into the blue waters of the Mediterranean or Aegean Seas and enjoy the warm sandy beaches. Keep in mind that the political situation in Greece has been a little volatile in recent years which could impact daily life.

Greece

Sweden

In Sweden, many undergraduate programmes are taught in English. So, if you love the idea of living in this Scandinavian country and already speak English, then you’re in luck.

Sweden, however, is commonly seen as one of the most advanced and progressive countries in the world because of its attitude towards equality and sustainability.

Two of the country’s best universities include Uppsala and Lund, respectively.

France

Like Spain, if you don’t speak the native language then you might have a hard time studying in France. However, if your French is très bon, then it could be perfect for you. It’s always been a popular choice for students of art, language and literature.

Paris is spectacular but extremely expensive so you may also want to consider Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux. Your living costs will be lower but you’ll still be able to enjoy the best cuisine that France has to offer.

The École Normale Supérieure and Paris-Sud University are just two of the prestigious places to study for international students.

Czech Republic

Eastern European countries are growing in popularity with international students thanks to their low costs and beautiful cities. Prague and Brno offer a vibrant culture, affordable living and excellent universities.

Czech universities are known for their high-quality programmes, particularly when it comes to the sciences, engineering and medicine.
