1. The Journey

The Journey is a sustainable, cycling-themed cafe which serves delicious vegetarian and vegan meals and a range of great hot drinks, such as herbal teas. Some of the most popular dishes are the Super Food Chilli and the vegan breakfast options.

The cafe also has a partnership with Recyke y’Bike, a charity that sells used bikes. There's a permanent bike maintenance engineer on site so you can take your bike to The Journey for repairs and get a bite to eat while you wait.

2. Soul Shack Vegan Grill

You can find the Soul Shack Vegan Grill in Newcastle’s STACK, a unique space dedicated to independent businesses and food sellers. The small cafe specialises in delicious vegan dishes, from a wide selection of burgers and wraps to vegan fried chicken. 

The Soul Shack Vegan Grill in the STACK is a great place to spend time with fellow students and relax after a week of studying. 

 

 

3. Camber Coffee

Located right in the centre of Newcastle, Camber Coffee is an ideal place to study. It’s a fully vegetarian cafe with vegan options including plant-based milks, but its main offering is a range of speciality coffee. Camber Coffee is a very communal space, great for those afternoon study groups where a cup of good coffee is the best companion.

You could even visit the cafe before starting a productive day. Sit down and enjoy the avocado on toast with one of the many impressive coffees Camber has to offer. 

 

 

 

4. Super Natural Cafe

Super Natural Cafe was Newcastle’s first-ever fully vegetarian cafe-restaurant. It serves delicious vegan and vegetarian food and has a chef who has previously worked at Michelin-starred restaurants.

Choose from lighter bites, sandwiches, wraps, burgers and a great range of pizza. The menu also includes desserts which change every day. 

The restaurant’s signature dish, an oven-roasted mushroom and aubergine lasagne is highly recommended.

 

 

5. Basement Snaxx

Basement Snaxx is a fully-vegetarian coffee shop with an ever-changing menu. The choices cover more traditional British food, such as pies and peas, as well as more international choices. Chilli ‘non’ carne, mac n’ cheese and beetroot daal are just some of the incredible vegetarian options you can try. 

Also, all the cakes are vegan.

 

 

6. Junk It Up Vegan Fast Food

A lot of students love fast food. It’s inexpensive, tasty and quick.

However, a lot of vegetarian students can feel like they’re missing out when presented with a meat-heavy menu. This is where Junk It Up Vegan Fast Food comes in.

The menu includes fully vegan alternatives to southern fried chicken, burgers, a huge range of kebabs, hot dogs and pizza. Like other fast food, the prices aren’t high. Junk It Up is the perfect choice for a Friday night treat for you and your friends.

 

 

7. The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn is one of the oldest pubs in the Newcastle area. If you’re looking for traditional British food in a traditional British pub (but with a vegetarian twist), you’ve come to the right place.

The menu offers curries and British classics such as sausage and mash, as well as an amazing vegan fish and chips.

The Ship Inn also has a range of board games that students can enjoy while they’re eating. It’s a great place to go for a society meeting. 

8. Gosforth Palace

Gosforth Palace is a Chinese restaurant located outside of the city centre. It’s not fully vegetarian but does have an amazing vegetarian menu. It’s very popular for its vegetarian takes on Chinese classics such as shredded ‘beef’ and deep-fried ‘pork’.

Also on the menu is chow mein, stir fry and an aubergine hot pot, as well as beautiful side dishes such as Peking dumplings and vegetable spring rolls.

9. Dabbawal

If you’re looking for great vegetarian Indian food, Dabbawal is the place to go. Like Gosforth Palace, it’s not 100% vegetarian but has amazing options for those who don’t eat meat. Dabbawal offers a unique take on traditional Indian cuisine. 

The menu contains classic Indian dishes such as chaats, masalas, curries, as well as tasty vegetarian meals like ‘Paneer Tikka & Cauliflower Chilli Fry’, ‘Masala Dosa Wrap’ and ‘Super Veg Thali’. 

 

 

10. Shoe Tree Cafe

Situated on Heaton Park Road in a popular student neighbourhood, Shoe Tree Cafe is a cute vegetarian cafe that’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or grabbing a snack. They also make amazing cakes that are well-loved throughout the student population. It’s a great place to relax on a weekend and read a book while sipping a hot drink.

Shoe Tree Cafe also offers a range of interesting workshops, events and activities such as life drawings and live music.
