One of the most important questions you’re thinking about right now could be ‘which country is safe for Indian students' and Is the UK safe for Indian students and if so, how safe?’ The answer is ‘very’ and we’re here to tell you why.

There are safe and secure banking opportunities

The UK has one of the most diverse banking systems in the world. Online banking makes it more user-friendly and convenient than ever to manage your money.

Larger banks, such as HSBC, Barclays and Nationwide, offer smart ways, such as easy to use online banking features, to keep track of all the money coming in and out of your bank account. It’s easier than ever to keep your finances safe as an Indian student in the UK.

As added incentives for joining, some banks even offer money off certain activities. For example, Santander offers a free four-year 16-25 railcard, which gets you train tickets for a greatly reduced price.

There are also new banking apps you can download onto your phone, such as Monzo, Starling Bank and Atom. These allow you to quickly check your finances with every purchase you make. Banking has never been safer or more efficient.

The UK health service is respected internationally

When you get a student visa, you’ll also become eligible to receive free medical treatment from the National Health Service (NHS).

The NHS is regarded as one of the world’s best providers of free healthcare. You’ll be able to request emergency treatment, doctor’s appointments, dental care and more while studying here.

All you need to do is apply for health insurance on top of your student visa. This is quite cheap and will help to protect you from any health or safety issues.

The emergency services are fast and reliable

The UK has helpful emergency services that are simple to call and available across the country. It’s quick and easy to call either 999 or 112 and quickly connect to the fire brigade, police or ambulance services - if you ever need them.

Having access to multiple different helpful services is just one of the ways the UK keeps its students safe. Here are some more contact numbers you could use when studying here:

  • NHS Direct - call 0845 4647 for 24-hour contact with a medical team
  • gas emergency - call 0800 111 999 if you think your accommodation has a gas leakage
  • non-emergency situations - call 101 when reporting a crime or seeking general information

The public transport is efficient

Staying safe in the UK includes the ability to easily and securely travel. Each town and city in this country has reliable transport links that run lots of bus and train services.

For example, if you study in Newcastle and want to go sightseeing around the UK, it takes less than three hours on the train to get to London. If you want to get to Edinburgh in Scotland, then it takes less than two hours.

There are also a number of cheap taxi services that are widely available in the UK. Uber, an app where you can quickly order a taxi with the simple click of a button, is also available in most major cities.

A well-respected degree in a safe student environment

As degrees and qualifications from the UK are internationally recognised and respected, gaining one of these will put you in a good position for a successful future career.

The UK has an incredibly diverse range of job sectors and many employment opportunities. When you’re applying for jobs or internships, a top-quality degree from a good university (especially a Russell Group member) helps you to stand out.

Studying here ensures you can easily create and maintain professional connections that you can benefit from for years to come.

For example, why not read one of our student testimonials? Safeer studies a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning and he’s discussed why studying the UK was the right choice for him.

Similarly, studying in the UK will add to your English language skills. Speaking English well will attract a wide range of employers, as English is the business language of the world.

Others will have unique societies that you won’t find anywhere else. For example, Newcastle has a whole range of exciting groups you can join, from the Baking Society, to the Yoga Society, to the Model United Nations Society.

Choosing a university with a good social culture makes every student safer while studying. Making friends, sticking together and supporting each other allows you to make the most of your university experience. You’ll also develop trusting relationships that will last your whole life.

The UK is one of the most exciting and diverse places to be. There are so many different types of people to meet and different things you can enjoy and experience every day. Newcastle is a friendly, multicultural city and the university itself has over 160 societies that you can easily join.
