The tips below will provide you with links and information on why the UK is a safe choice for university study.

  1. How a university keeps you safe
  2. Safety tips for students
  3. Mental safety and wellbeing for students

1. How a university keeps you safe

All UK universities have a strict set of safety procedures that they follow, which help you feel reassured when figuring out which country is safe for Chinese students.

Universities and students’ unions work closely with local police to ensure students’ safety. It’s just one of the reasons why Newcastle University was awarded a good security score of 81.1 by Times Higher Education.

International students also gave Newcastle University a safety rating of 95%, based on their record of excellent safety. We also have a crime prevention page on our website which gives you helpful advice on how to make your university experience safer.

2. Safety for students

There are lots of things any student has to learn to be safe when moving to university but don’t worry, the information below is easy to remember.

  • Getting to know your city and campus is a great first step. Read up on the city of your choice. Some universities also offer virtual tours where international students can get to know the area from the comfort of their home. Newcastle University has a dedicated page just for this. Why not take a video tour of the Newcastle University campus?
  • Taking care of your items is a big responsibility as a student. Make sure that you have safe spaces to store your valuables, such as lockers or your room. It’s unlikely you’ll ever need them but Newcastle University has a security team who patrol university-owned residences and are available to contact 24 hours a day.
  • You should also insure all of your valuables for extra security. Another good idea is to download useful apps on your phone, like CityMapper for getting around, or Guardly, an app that connects to local security and public authorities.

3. Mental wellbeing for students

Another aspect of considering which country is safe for Chinese students is what services a university provides to help with mental health worries or issues.

Studying in the UK is incredibly rewarding, but we recognise that you might have slight worries about one of the following issues:

  • Missing home
  • Making new friends
  • Different studying styles
  • Finances

These issues are completely normal so don’t worry if you’re feeling a little concerned. The best thing to do is to take advantage of the university student support team. They’re available to offer helpful advice and information if you have any questions about budgeting, accommodation or anything else.

Newcastle University works to welcome all students by providing societies and events where you can find fun social groups to join, and meet people from across the entire world. For example, the Chinese Students & Scholars Society puts on regular meetings for Chinese students to connect and enjoy a richer and more successful time at university.

Also, studying in the UK allows you to make friendships and connections with people from all over the globe. There are so many different parts to an international student’s journey and we think safety is a big part of them all.
