The beginning

Here’s what Rebecca has had to say about the beginning of her Newcastle University journey.

She posted: “I chose to do Sociology not long before beginning the university application process. I’d never studied it before, but I knew I’d enjoy it as a degree.

“Next, I took to Google to find the perfect university for me. Being comfortably predicted good grades, I aimed high - Russell Group.

“The course was brimming with modules I’d genuinely want to study and sounded the most interesting by far.”

The offer

Here’s what Tsvetelina had to say about her offer from Newcastle University after she moved to study in this diverse, vibrant city.

“I was accepted into all five of my university choices,” she posted. “However, even before I applied I was pretty certain, I remember telling my mum, ‘This is the one, I want Newcastle University.’

“I probably fell in love with the University ever since I laid my eyes on their Facebook page, from the mesmerising pictures of sunsets over the city to student manifestos and updates about their research progress.

“I just felt like I belonged to this institution and that Newcastle is where academic magic happens. It seemed like a modern version of my own Hogwarts! I remember jumping up and down out of joy and counting my last days until I was able to immerse myself in the exquisite culture of such a vibrant city.”

The arrival

Jenny, from Germany, is another international student who’s glad she moved to Newcastle University.

“A few days before, I was equally excited and nervous about starting a new life in Newcastle. Moving to another country on my own and not speaking my mother tongue was definitely a scary prospect, but as soon as I arrived, I met so many other international students who (of course!) felt exactly the same.

“The students already at the University were a big help in making the transition far less daunting too, enabling me to feel happy and comfortable in my new home!

“I came on my own but registered for the ‘Airport Meet & Greet’, meaning that as soon as I stepped out of the plane, someone was waiting to take me (and my 100 suitcases!) to my student accommodation.”

The opportunities

Ghangaa was another international student at Newcastle University who came to the UK to study. She’s thankful for the opportunities she received while studying here.

In her blog, she wrote: “My undergrad adventure has been the most prominent years of my life in my transition from a teenager to an independent young woman.

“I’ve experienced many things for the first time - living with flatmates, moving to a foreign country, being extra self-disciplined when waking up for 9.00 [lectures].

“The opportunities I’ve had have given me great memories and gifted me a second home in Newcastle, a bunch of amazing people and the drive to push myself out of my comfort zone in order to flourish.”

Looking back...

Here’s a collection of some of the amazing things lots of different students - including some we haven’t mentioned above - are saying about the time they’ve spent at Newcastle University.

Rebecca

“Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing! I feel so lucky to live in a city as vibrant and dynamic as Newcastle. So my advice to you is: go with your gut and if your gut says NCL, I’m certain you won’t regret it!”

Tsvetelina

“Looking back at my first two years in Newcastle, my heart fills with warmth and happiness and I am delighted to say that I have grown and flourished. This unique experience helped me conquer my fears of adapting to new social settings, taught me how to learn from my mistakes and made me more independent.”

Tsvetlina

Ghangaa

“My life as a student in Newcastle is one that I will hold closest to my heart and cherish deeply. My undergrad life has given me a strong foundation to face challenges that the future may hold and even though goodbyes aren’t the easiest, it allows for new doors to open up.

“‘Thank you, Newcastle.”
